123Webmaster.com : Onsite : Promotion
Promoting Your Site Page 2

by Ian McDonald
http://www.bigresources.com

This tutorial is the second page of 3 on looking at ways of increasing traffic to your website and making sure you and your site is ready, and search engine ready.

This is the view of one person who has had some success with site promotion and may not be the view shared by others. For the purpose of these tutorials we will use a network site of Big Resources Inc. called A1 JavaScripts, of course this is an easy site to use as it exhibits and allows you to download stuff (javascripts) for free, and "free stuff sites" are always going to be very popular compared to a private site that sells pocket knives for example, however the basic principals apply for both and infact all sites.

So if you have read Part One, lets get straight into it. - Understanding Meta Tags.

        You should have at least heard of meta tags, these are the tags that are located inside the <head></head> tags of your html document, a basic example looks like this:

<head>
   <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
   <meta name="Author" content="123webmaster.com">
   <meta name="GENERATOR" content="Mozilla/4.73 [en] (Win98; I) [Netscape]">
   <meta name="Description" content="Site Promotion">
   <meta name="KeyWords" content="Site promotion">
   <title>Site Promotion</title>
</head>

Search engines work in a lot of different ways, and we have to try and prepare the best we can for them. A search engine uses what is called a spider that looks at your site and lists it on the information that it finds. One type of search engine reads your meta tags (above), and providing we get these right, the rest of the search engine spidering methods should fall into place.

So this is one way of getting the most out of them.
We are going to deal with the 3 most important parts here, the Title, Description and Keywords.
First we better mention a word about "spamming", normally we associate this with email, but yes, you can spam search engines also, and this is a major "no no" that can get your site banned from being indexed (spidered and listed). This can be done in 2 main ways, the first, most common way is by submitting your site to often in a short period of time and we will touch on this later on. The other way, is by having too many characters in your description and keywords.

       Lets look at our limits. it is recommended:

Your title be no more than 100 characters long.
Your Description should be no more than 200 characters.
Your Keywords should be no more than 1000 characters.

Now you're thinking, "how do I find out if I have to many and do I have to count them all?"

Don't worry, we will get to that, lets make them first.

Ok, here you probably need to know and remember one word. "RELEVANCY". (Your tags must be relevant to the content of your site to be successful). This can not be stressed enough. Content is another very important word.

To make your tags, you can use an online Meta Tag Creator and all you need to do is copy and paste the tags inside your <head></head> if you need to.

Our Title Tag.
This should include the title of your site and contain a brief description, the more descriptive the better.
Example: A1 JavaScripts - The home to enhance your website - free javascript, dhtml, tutorials, tools and more.
This is infact 101 characters in length including tabs, spaces and carriage returns and does actually carry a warning. However, you can see the relevant words relating to the site.

Our Description.
This should be a good description of your site, similar to the one you thought up in Part 1 of this tutorial.
Example: A site containing a large amount of FREE quality JavaScripts including a DHTML section, tutorials, forum and online tools, well presented including examples of each script.
This Tag is 172 characters in length including tabs, spaces and carriage returns, so it could actually be a little bigger, however, it is still descriptive and remains within the safety limits.

Our Keywords.
This is the "biggy" !! There is a few important things to remember here.

a). Cover all your bases, some suggest dividing your keywords by commas, others say spaces, so use both. IE: tutorials, tools, forum, etc (do not use words like "etc.")
b). Do not enter a single keyword any more than 3 times.
IE: random banner, random quote, random midi, etc. This is an easy thing to make a mistake doing when you are allowed up to 1000 characters. This can stop a search engine spidering your tags.
c). Some search engines will stop spidering your mega tag keywords if they find a 2 letter word so try an avoid using them.
d). Make sure your keywords relate to the content on your page.
Ok, are you ready for it?
Example:  A1 JavaScripts contains many javascripts, tutorials, online tools and DHTML section including full working examples. Frame breaker, no right click, bookmark, random midi, clocks, cookies, rotating text, spinning, scrollers, search engines, meta tag makers, status bar, shooter photo gallery, plugins, glowing , latest, links, user information, banner, rotator, browser type, history, day of the week, hard drives, number of visits, ip grabber, background freezer, changer, cursor type,moving eyes, rainbow text, random background,screen shaker, jump to, mouse over, button, dropdown menu, backbutton, site redirect, midi control, random link, rotator, banner, open close window, forward backward button, email me form, auto start hidden, scrolling , backward text, link chooser, scroller, bubble , action , complex clock, CDmidi, countdown, Java Scripts, shuffle, flying image, viewer, last updated, floating menu, scrolling, password
This is 944 characters long. (room for improvement, but within safety limits.)
Note: No single word is used 3 times or more. But wait you say, there are 2 lettered words!!, that is correct, there are, but although divided by a space, they are not alone but part of the name of a script, so therefore are relevant and are important to include.
IE: no right click, ip grabber, jump to, email me form.
All these words correspond to words on the page and content of the site. You will also see that the first words tie in with the description, making the description more relevant to the keywords.

SITES USING FRAMES
Sites using frames actually have an advantage, put your keywords, description in the head of your index page ( or page that contains your frameset - skeleton page) as you would normally, and load your page up with all words relevant to your site. As these will not be seen by any browser, make them as small as possible to take up less space (k) and keep it fast loading. This is what the search spider will read when it compares your content to your keywords. The result will be a better relevancy due to the amount of words you can cram in that you normally couldn't on a non - frames site because they would be seen.

Result:- A Basic Search Engine Result.

Don't worry if it is cut off, another search engine will probably include more.

Here is A1 JavaScripts listing at Yahoo.

Ok, we have learned how to make our meta tags and what the result is going to be, lets look at getting it right and improving our ranking. Lets move on to Part 3.
